Florina Fixane story
On the 7th of October 2014 my husband and I were blessed with beautiful twin boys, and we named them Vuyo and Vuyani. As I wake up from theatre I was informed the younger twin Vuyani is in ICU he had lack of oxygen.
My baby stayed in ICU for 27 days by God’s grace he survived and was discharged.
At 3 months I took them to see Paediatrician. He noticed that Vuyani is not following on the toy sounds like his brother. He noticed that they are not on the same pace.
He then referred us to the Occupational therapist by the name of Rene De bruin, luckily enough when we got to Rene, she knew my Son from the hospital while he was still admitted. She informed us that due lack of oxygen at birth my Son’s brain could have been affected. That was when our journey with Rene begun.
She made us aware of the things we were not aware of on my Son. Her intervention made it easier for us to know on how to handle Vuyani.
Her sessions with Vuyani brought a great impact in him and to me as a mother as I got to learn on my son’s condition, I also get to know that his brother’s toys will be different to his, and learn that as much as Vuyani is getting extra attention his brother must not feel as if we love Vuyani more than him. He started to do things we thought he will never be able to do. He started to sit on his own when he was 9 months and started to walk at the age of 2, and out of the nappy at 4 years.
When he was 2 years he went for MIR scan and it was confirmed that his right part of his brain was damaged due complications at birth.
When he was 5 years Rene started to prepare him for school, getting him to do the things he supposed to do when he gets to school. And that same year she went through school application process with us.
Vuyani was then called for interview at the age of 6 years, and wow he did exceptionally well and was accepted by the school. It was quite difficult for us to separate them as they have to go to their different school, but because we learnt this when he was young it was easy for us to accept. However it does not sit well with his brother at times as he will say “Mommy I’m going to the school with my brother” but he gets to understand that they are different.
His now 6 and turning 7 in October and he started the school this year and he’s doing well.
I will like to take this opportunity to thank Rene for her intervention in my Son’s life. Her time, her resources and most importantly her patience on Vuyani made it possible for his development. Her passion towards my Son was amazing for the past 5 years with been with her.
The journey wouldn’t be easy for us without her; she taught us the most beautiful thing as Vuyani’s parents, that we should accept him and not to compare him with his brother. Give him the love and support he needs. And we are proud to see Vuyani doing the things we thought they are impossible for him. The support from his family is also amazing, Daddy, my Mom, his brother and his 2 big sisters.
We are grateful for Rene’s therapy I can recommend anyone anytime for her excellent service.
